What Do Sexual Dreams Mean?

Everyone has dreams, and some are surprisingly universal like dreams of falling, being late for an exam, or even having sexual dreams. These types of dreams are entirely normal and very common.

Sexual dreams are a natural part of life, and it's quite common for everyone to experience them at some point, though some people may have them more frequently than others. It's also completely normal to dream about being intimate with someone other than your partner.

A study by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine found that approximately 8% of all dreams include some form of sexual activity.  Although this evidence has it's limitations, it still indicates that sex is very much on our minds even while we sleep.

The Most Common Sexual Dreams

If you’ve been experiencing erotic dreams, you might be curious whether they’re typical or unique to you.

Calm down, you’re not alone many people have similar dreams.

Let’s explore some of the most common themes in sex dreams.

  • Cheating on Your Partner

If you’ve ever had a dream about cheating on your partner, there’s no need to stress. This type of dream is surprisingly common and can happen whether you’re married or not. Such dreams might reflect feelings of jealousy or a sense of emotional or physical distance in your relationship.

  • Sex with Your Partner

Having a sex dream about your partner can indicate that you have recently connected with them on an intellectual, spiritual, psychological, or emotional level.

  • Sex with a Boss or Authority Figure

According to the Sleep Foundation, dreaming about having sex with your boss or someone in a position of authority could be a sign that you're seeking their approval. If you're spending a lot of time around that person or constantly thinking about them, the stress of dealing with their expectations at work might be making them appear in your dreams. Sometimes, these kinds of dreams can also point to deeper issues, like growing up with a charismatic, narcissistic parent who didn’t provide the consistent attention you needed.

When keeping a dream journal on RUYA you can explore the meanings of your sexual dreams from different perspectives.

  • Sex with Ex

Studies show that sexual dreams about an ex-partner are quite common. Luckily, this is usually nothing to be concerned about. Dreaming about your ex in a sexual way doesn't necessarily mean you miss them! Especially if you're in a new relationship, your mind might just be blending past experiences together.

  • Sex with Multiple Partners

Dreaming about having multiple sexual partners can symbolize different things based on the context of the dream and the dreamer's personal experiences. For some, it may reflect a desire for greater sexual freedom or exploration. It could also suggest feeling overwhelmed or struggling to manage the responsibilities of a committed relationship. Additionally, this dream may represent a fear of intimacy or a need for validation from various sources.

  • Sex With Your Best Friend

Dreaming about having sex with someone, like a close friend, doesn't necessarily mean we want to be sexually intimate with them. This person is a good friend because they likely possess qualities you admire. Such a dream may simply reflect your appreciation for the positive traits they have. It confirms that you admire many aspects of their personality or the connection you share.

Our dreams are a way for the unconscious part of us to come through in different ways, and our dreams can have many different symbolic meanings.’’ Carl Jung

  • Dream Where you Catch Your Partner Cheating

What we encounter in our dreams may not always be real, but the emotions tied to those experiences absolutely are. Therefore, dreaming that your partner is cheating doesn't automatically signal a reason for concern. However, such dreams can sometimes reflect underlying issues like feelings of abandonment, trust issues, or a sense of betrayal.

  • Sex With a Family Member

Don’t worry, this is completely normal! Sex dreams aren't necessarily about physical intimacy, but rather the psychological connection with the person and the dynamics of the relationship. Perhaps there's a personality trait or talent in your sibling or cousin that you admire, and your dream is pointing that out. Early family relationships can influence adult sexuality, and these influences may show up in sexual dreams.

Dreams Don't Always Reflect Desires

It's worth mentioning that neither of these dream theories suggests your dreams are a direct reflection of your desires. Honestly, they might just be a way for your brain to process stress or get a little creative.

Sexual Dreams and Stress

If you're having more sexual dreams, it could be a sign that something in your life needs attention. It might be stress from your relationship, or it could be anxiety from work, health, finances, or other worries.

Want to stop having recurring sexual dreams? Here are a few suggestions for you!

  • Enjoy them:If they bring you excitement and joy, let them happen. Sexuality is a natural and positive part of life, and there’s no harm in enjoying harmless sexual dreams.

  • Discuss with your partner: For some, the idea of their partner being intimate with someone else can be intriguing. Knowing your partner well is key, so approach this topic thoughtfully. It could become an opportunity to strengthen your bond and explore each other's desires. This discussion might also pave the way for conversations about enhancing sexual pleasure and trying new experiences together.

  • Develop healthy sleep habits: Aim to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, limit screen time before bed, and create a relaxing and comfortable sleep environment.

  • Think about your dreams: Pay attention to what your sexual dreams are telling you. If they hint at something missing in your life, explore ways to meet those needs in your daily routine.

RUYA can help you with this. When you keep a dream journal and write down your dreams, you may notice an increase in the frequency of your sexual dreams.

Take it easy: Try to keep your stress levels in check during the day, and wind down with some simple relaxation techniques to help your mind and body chill out before bed.

Listen to your inner child: If you find yourself dreaming about others and worry it might reflect something unresolved within you, nurturing your inner child could be a meaningful step. Taking time to explore your past and understanding what your inner child needs can bring clarity and may even reduce the frequency of such dreams.
